Local Gals: Crafty Bastards Moving

Crafty Bastards, the massive indie arts fair that Washington City Paper has sponsored since 2004, will have a new home this year: Union Market.

The fair, which had set up for the last seven years at the Marie Reed Learning Center in Adams Morgan, will take place Nov. 10 at the new venue. Union Market, opening this weekend, will primarily host artisan food vendors; last year, the market hired chef Richie Brandenburg away from José Andrés' ThinkFoodGroup to run its operations.

"Their philosophy of embracing artisanal products and individual business owners lines up with what we've been doing with Crafty Bastards for the last eight years—connecting shoppers with makers and deepening their understanding of how things are made," says festival director Sara Dick.

For the first time, attending will require a ticket. Beginning later this month, $10 tickets will be sold on washingtoncitypaper.com, as well as a limited number of $25 VIP tickets that get you into the fair early—before everyone else has a chance to buy up the handmade, indie crafts you want.

Reminder: Boonsboro Days Craft Fair Tomorrow

I'm heading out to Boonsboro this evening to drop off my boxes of stamps and crafting goodies at Lauri's house for tomorrow's Boonsboro Days Craft Fair.  Once you're done perusing the 150+ vendors, be sure to swing by Lauri's for her collective rubber stamp/scrapbooking yard sale.  Lauri and her friends will have a ton of used stamps and other crafting goodies for you to buy.  Great stamp lines such as Just For Fun, B-Line, Posh Impressions, JudiKins, Magenta and Stampington will be sold at rock bottom prices.  I've also heard that a Stampin' Up rep may be there, selling off the retired lines.  Lauri also has a Cricut Slice and Wishblade (the blue one!!) to sell.

Local Girls Mark Your Calendars For September 8th: Boonsboro Days (MD)

The annual Boonsboro, MD craft festival is fast approaching.  If you're a crafter or a yard sale lover, you won't want to miss out on the September 8th event.  In addition to the 150+ vendors, you'll find antiques, collectibles and good food.  There will also be a ton of locals peddling their goods in yard sales.

My friend Lauri will be hosting a crafting yard sale in Boonsboro that day.  A number of us  will be clearing out our craft stashes (lots of stamps, a Cricut Slice and a Wishblade.... among other goodies) at Lauri's yard sale.  I'll be sure to post more information in the days leading up to the event.  Lauri promised to get me a list of stamp companies/stamp lines that she will be selling off. 

Two For Tuesday: Running with Zombies & Mr. Morris Lessmore

Two things that grabbed my attention this week:

1.  "Run For Your Lives" 5K.  Here's the premise...  You gather up your friends and try to conquer an obstacle-laden 5K course while being chased by ZOMBIES.  Seriously.  ZOMBIES! The zombies don't actually eat your brains, but they will try to take one of the three flags around your waist. I don't run.  I hate running.  However, I think running from zombies would be too much fun to pass up. 

There are 11 races across the country this year and one happens to be in our own backyard (Baltimore).  Last year's race had over 10,000 participants.  I just found out that you can also sign up to be a Zombie too!  I am all over this.  You can either be a chaser (running Zombie) or a stumbler (slow moving Zombie).  I just checked with the hubby and if I can get a sitter for the weekend (uh... Suni?), you'll find us at the November race.  Any good ideas?  Prom queen zombie?  Bride zombie?  Oh, to be undead!!

This should be great training for the apocalypse...

2.  The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.  If you haven't seen this Oscar-winning wonderful animated 15-minute short, you must.  It is available via YouTube and absolutely free.  A combination of The Wizard of Oz, Hurricane Katrina and an old Buster Keaton movie, the short is visually stunning and will leave the booklover with a lump in her throat.  Once you've fallen in love with the short, you'll want to go check out their iPad app.  I'll off to download it now!

Two Local Crops To Raise Money For American Cancer Society

Two dear friends are holding separate fundraising crops in April to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

As most of us have, both of these women have had their lives touched by cancer.  They have both blown me away with their dedication and devotion to raising money for the American Cancer Society.  I will be out of town for Loretta's April 16th crop (I desperately wish I could be there to support her), but I will be attending Jennie's April 9th crop.  I do hope that the local gals will turn out to support both of these fine events.  If you can't attend, maybe you could contact Loretta (540--955-2266) or Jennie (703-470-5434) about donating towards their teams (or donating a prize for the raffles & door prizes?).

Oh Snap! Photography Workshop with Marirosa

Over the years, I've had dozens of people ask if I could recommend a good photography teacher in the area.  I was fortunate to have Marirosa Anderson (of Photography by Marirosa) as a guest teacher during last year's "Summer in Paris" retreat.  I'm thrilled to announce that she just set class dates for January and February 2011. 

For those of you that were able to get into her "Summer in Paris" class, she assures me that there is very little overlap between that class and "Oh Snap!".  As class sizes are limited (smaller groups will work to your advantage!), you'll want to sign up quickly.

Oh Snap! is a workshop that teaches parents how to take better pictures of their kids. It focuses on concepts you can easily put into practice, just by understanding lighting, composition, perspective and age appropriate tech-niques. Participants will walk away with a 70 page presentation manual that includes cheat sheets and quick tips for common situations which will help them improve their photos immediately... just by taking the time to assess light, change up their angle, and remember a few quick tips. Topics include: * training your eye to find the light, * composition and perspective, * lens and focal length selection, * tips for great images at any age * output: downloading, storage and printing * high level review of exposure * auto and semi-manual settings This workshop is taught by Marirosa Anderson, | Photography by Marirosa Workshop Cost: $75 per person Class is approx. 3 hours long with a max of 8 people per workshop for a smaller group setting and light refreshments will be provided. Local Event: Eileen's 9th Annual Barn Sale

Eileen Hull (you probably know her as the designer that makes those amazing Scoreboard dies for Sizzix) hosts a barn sale every year.  It has grown & grown over time into an extraordinary crafting marketplace.  This year's barn sale is this weekend & I'm dying to go.  I've never been able to make it in the past and I think that this might just be the year where I get to go be inspired & drop some serious cash.  Want to join me??

Local Event: Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair

If you're in the D.C. area, this weekend's must-see event for craters is the Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair.  Now in its 7th year, the Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair is an exhibition and sale of handmade alternative arts & crafts from independent artists.  This year's fair will be held on Saturday, October 2nd from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Marie Reed Learning Center at 18th & Wyoming in the uber-hip Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington D.C.

You'll find handcrafted jewelry, punk rock baby clothes (my favorite!), handspun yarn, demented toys, screen printing, clothing, food and so much more!

Summer Lovin', Had Me A Blast

 
I have so many memories wrapped up in the movie Grease.  Back in 1978, my parents were worried about the adult-content of the movie I was so desperate to see.  They had their own "date night" to check it out & the next morning they let me know that they thought I could handle it.  I was thrilled!  I have no idea how many times I watched it as a child.  I memorized every word of every song.  I cherished my well-worn cassette tape & was devastated when my little brother (7 years younger than I), strung the tape out all over the house (hey buddy, if you're reading this, I'm still not over it).

I've discovered that they are releasing Grease as a Sing-A-Long in select cities.

When I first moved to the D.C. area, I dragged my husband to the Sing-A-Long version of The Sound of Music.  He wasn't too thrilled, but I loved every moment.  It reminded me of my old Rocky Horror Picture Show days.  We booed when the Nazis came on the screen, we threw rice when the Captain & Maria married, and we sang along.  To every word.  My favorite part was the beginning of the show, when those who dressed in costume marched up on stage.  There were a ton of nuns and one woman with Princess Leia style head buns on the side of her head.  She wore a plain brown dress and carried a bunch of roses.  She did nothing but bow over & over.  Only die hard fans would get the reference.  I just about peed my pants.

I'm dying to drag my CraftChix out to the new Grease Sing-A-Long.  Unfortunately, it's not in our area.  I'm begging you (BEGGING YOU) to head over to their website and vote for them to play it in Baltimore.  I totally have visions of dressing as Rizzo (complete with a hickey from Kenickie) in a pencil skirt and lots of red lipstick.  I always wanted to be Rizzo.
