Let me pre-warn you, the Harpers Ferry Flea Market can be a bit scary. The first time I went I was thinking that it would be a flea market straight out of Country Living magazine. Ummm.... no.
It's dusty.
And there's a lot of junk.
And shotguns.
However, if you venture deep enough, there are tons of treasures to be found for the altered artist/paper crafter.
Vintage sheet music
Watch faces & crystals
Old keys
Vintage "Life" magazines
Old costume jewelry
Great old books, ready to be altered
Vintage children's books
Most of the ephemera used in my "Where I'm From" class during the 2008 Summer in Paris retreat was purchased at this Flea Market. The prices are dirt cheap & bargains are easy to find. All of the brooches used in my 2008 Summer in Paris "The Women Who Went Before You" class were picked up for a steal at this flea market. I once found a 100 year old baby cradle (headboard & footboard) for $2.00. TWO DOLLARS! I'm going to paint it with chalkboard paint & use it in my studio once the walls go up.
Now, you'll have to sort through Tupperware lids (why would anyone sell just the lid?) and some really tacky figurines to find the good stuff, but it's always fun to look!
The Flea Market is open during the summer from dawn to dusk on Saturday & Sunday. Enjoy treasure hunting!
