I know a number of my students are also fellow letterboxers, so I thought I'd let you in on some of my favorite letterboxes in the Harpers Ferry, WV area. If you are curious about the hobby of letterboxing, read my first entry here & then you can read all of my letterboxing entries here.
Some of my favorite letterboxes are mere minutes away from the Quality Hotel & Conference Center (where the 2010 "Summer in Paris" retreat will be held). If you have a break between classes & want to enjoy a nice hike (keep in mind that it will be August), give the Animals in Harpers Ferry clues a try. Click here to get the clues.
The complete hike should take you about an hour & a half, at a leisurely pace. If you have a two hour break, this is a great get-out-and-stretch-your-back trip. I know that several of you plan to arrive early on Friday, so that you can enjoy the sights. Start here. You'll love it.
The hike is fairly easy, as it is all downhill. You'll start in the parking lot of the Harpers Ferry National Park (just 3 or 4 minutes down the road from our hotel). It is $6.00 per car to get into the park. Once you start the hike, you'll find two letterboxes (the third in the series is missing) on your way down the hill. I loved this series, as it was easy, the view was spectacular & it included a mini waterfall. At the end of your hike, you'll find yourself all the way down the mountain. You'll have two choices here -- hike all the way back up OR walk into lower town & catch the free shuttle back to the parking lot. Choose the shuttle. The hike into lower town is flat and unbelievably breathtaking. As you walk along the canal, keep an eye out for heron, turtles and lots of other wildlife.
The stamps in this series have a Muppets theme. They were such a cheery addition to my letterbox book.
If you've already done this series, let me suggest some other favorite letterboxes in the area:
